Welcome to the inaugural FIELD NOTES blog post. In the spirit of the incomparable Mary Oliver who wrote “attention is the beginning of devotion” this is a place to share all that’s happening in the studio and beyond, all that I’m devoted to. Have you read Mary Oliver’s UPSTREAM? In it she talks about “inherited responsibility” and how she has inherited an “immeasurable fund of thoughts and ideas, from writers and thinkers long gone…” I feel that too, and it’s exciting to have a place to share those ideas.
Below is a process piece from my book about E. B. White, SOME WRITER! a writer who has inspired and urged me to question not just what I write, but living an artist’s life. The aim is to “observe with passion, to think with patience, to live always caringly.” That’s worth paying attention to.
